Messi Leads Kalshi’s AFA World Cup Campaign as Trading Volume Hits $5.1B

Lionel Messi has fronted a paid Instagram promotion for Kalshi as the prediction market exchange expands its 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign through an official sponsorship of the Argentina Football Association. The post, which also featured Nicolas Otamendi and Rodrigo De Paul, promoted a Kalshi-branded AFA jersey giveaway and generated more than 1.4 million likes within days, according to Gambling Insider.

The Messi activation follows Kalshi’s June 10 partnership announcement with the AFA. Under the agreement, Kalshi will serve as an official sponsor of the Argentina Football Association for the duration of the World Cup. The rights cover co-branded activations, coordinated social media campaigns and the use of AFA intellectual property, including Argentina’s crest.

Genius Sports, AFA’s Official Data & Streaming partner, will provide official sports data to support the creation and settlement of related sports prediction market contracts. Kalshi will also participate in Genius Sports’ integrity information-sharing processes, adding a formal monitoring channel around tournament-linked markets.

The Cryptonomist, citing Bloomberg, reported that Kalshi reached a record $5.1 billion in notional trading volume during the opening week of the World Cup.

Kalshi’s sports push has previously included names such as Giannis Antetokounmpo, Bryson DeChambeau and Jose Mourinho, Gambling Insider reported. The AFA deal moves that strategy from individual ambassador activity into formal football sponsorship.

The regulatory backdrop remains unresolved. Kalshi operates as a CFTC-regulated exchange and positions sports event contracts differently from traditional sports betting. Several U.S. states continue to challenge that position, arguing that some sports event contracts resemble wagering and should fall under state gambling authority.

For the prediction markets, the AFA campaign is a high-profile test of whether exchange-based sports contracts can sit alongside the World Cup’s existing betting, media and sponsorship economy. For regulators, it gives that model a much larger stage to scrutinize.
