The World Cup’s Integrity Paradox

The World Cup’s Integrity Paradox

FIFA has declared the 2026 World Cup to be completely free of matchfixing, with no evidence of foul play across all 104 games. The tournament was given the all-clear by its Integrity Task Force, which is backed by the FBI, INTERPOL, and Sportradar.

However, the independent Copenhagen Group, which operates under the Council of Europe and is also part of the same FIFA taskforce, has expressed disagreement. The group recorded 7 yellow alerts, analysed 12 suspicious incidents, and kept 15 matches under extra surveillance, particularly during the final group stage. FIFA has not responded to this discrepancy.

The betting numbers are staggering. Global turnover hit $240 billion, almost double the total for the 2022 tournament. In France, bets totalled $1.52 billion, with bookmakers earning $184 million — double what they earned at the previous World Cup. The France/Spain semi‑final alone attracted $74 million in bets, the country’s highest football betting total since 2010.

Also, several odd moments caught the monitors’ attention. A market on US player Balogun’s return opened the same day that he was sent off against Bosnia, the only such case among the 14 red cards issued. Three days later, FIFA confirmed that he would play against Belgium.

South Africa’s Themba Zwane was also sent off in the opening match. Ferran Torres' goal was disallowed following a 3.5‑minute VAR review. When Spain drew 0-0 with Cape Verde, nearly $5 million was bet against the favourite, despite a 91% win probability. The Copenhagen Group also tracked prediction markets for the first time.

While FIFA’s clean sheet is reassuring, the gap between the two integrity reports raises a quiet question. Zurich’s silence speaks almost as loudly as the data itself.
