UK Gambling Revenue Hits £4.5 billion as Black Market Concerns Intensify

The latest figures from The Gambling Commission show that the UK’s regulated gambling industry generated £4.5 billion in gross gambling yield in the last quarter of 2025, up from £4.4 billion the previous year.

Online gambling remained dominant, with online casinos, betting, and bingo accounting for £2.12 billion of the total. Online casinos alone contributed £1.49 billion, representing 70% of this sector.

A parallel survey, conducted between September 2025 and January 2026, found that 47% of respondents had gambled in the previous 4 weeks. Online participation stood at 37%, compared to 27% for in‑person gambling. Older age groups reported the highest overall activity, while men showed higher engagement than women across most products.

Alongside these growth figures, the Betting and Gaming Council issued a sharp warning that unlicensed operators could be taking as much as £1 billion in wagers on Premier League football each season. The BGC’s chief executive pointed out that although most football fans still bet with regulated firms, the criminal black market is actively courting these customers by offering no consumer protections.

The trade body cited research estimating that offshore betting turnover had surged from £5 billion in 2019 to £16.6 billion in 2025, with gross yield from illegal sites rising from £200 million to £685 million over that period.

These concerns arise as licensed operators face steep tax increases: Remote Gaming Duty rose from 21% to 40% in April 2026, and remote betting duty set to climb to 25% in April 2027.

The government itself has acknowledged that such changes might push some customers towards unlicensed alternatives. In response, the Gambling Commission has announced plans for an AI‑driven advertising sweep to detect marketing materials that are unsuitable for underage people, and has warned that any breaches will lead to immediate sanctions and possible referral to the regulator.

There are currently 8,148 licensed premises and over 191,000 gambling activities in the UK, the regulated sector remains substantial, but the shadow of a growing black market now looms large over its future stability.
